More pics from the Amber Fort

The Amber Fort (and many other historical sites) is undergoing renovations in preparation for the Goodwill Games that will take place in Delhi in 2010. It is anticipated that hoardes of tourists will decide to tour the country, and India, understandably, wants to show off its treasures. I couldn't get used to seeing women doing physically demanding work in ankle-length skirts or sarees, much less the fact that they carry so much weight on their heads as if it were nothing. I did learn the trick to keeping things balanced on your head is to not try to balance things on your pointy head. People (men and women both) have these donut like things made from fabric that they put on their heads under whatever they're hauling. We saw women carrying piles of stuff 2-3 feet tall on their heads! My neck hurts just thinking about it. All in all, these women made me feel like a big wimp.
